Overview

Master of International Affairs, Global Governance (MIA-GG) Program of School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University aims to cultivate talents in international affairs for China, its neighboring countries and countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. Students will gain a thorough understanding of China’s domestic and foreign policies and its national conditions. With a global vision and proficient foreign languages skills, the students will be versed in international rules and seasoned in international negotiations. Through program study, social practice, thesis writing and other teaching activities, students' knowledge in global governance theory and practice will be enhanced with greater aptitude to engage in international affairs and global governance. The core competences required to work in foreign affairs departments, international organizations, multinational corporations and non-governmental departments will be fostered, and cross-disciplinary talents equipped with global vision, strategic thinking and innovative ability in the field of international affairs and global governance will be cultivated.

This program, a perfect integration of both international relations and political science disciplines, combines liberal arts with science to tear down disciplinary boundaries and fosters a diverse and international-oriented academic atmosphere. Focusing on the latest dynamics in international affairs, and responding to the practical needs arising from foreign affairs, international cooperation and global governance, this program aims to cultivate students to systematically master the theories, methodology and professional skills in the field of international affairs and global governance. They will thus be well-positioned to make more contributions to new approaches to global governance and international cooperation and become leaders in driving national development, international collaboration and common progress of mankind.

Highlights

Guided by the development philosophy of innovation, integration and internationalization, this program focuses on China's relations with the rest of the world, taps into Chinese traditional wisdom while absorbing modern scientific methodology in the context of global challenges. It is dedicated to cultivating multi-disciplinary and innovation-conscious talents, building a partnership network across political, business and academic communities. The strengths of international organizations and regional-country studies will be leveraged to establish China's own knowledge system. The program is also committed to fostering global governance talents with both a profound knowledge of China and the world, as well as honed skills in interpreting rules and promoting communication.

Innovation: Governance innovation focusing on the relationship between China and the world

With the objective of cultivating cross-disciplinary and innovation-conscious specialists, a class model with both Chinese and foreign students will be adopted to enhance Chinese students' ability to better engage in international affairs while improving international students' grasp of China's foreign policy and the patterns and features of China’s presence in global governance, which is essential for further studying the relationship between China and the world. And most important, this will encourage international students to join hands with their Chinese counterparts to advance the reform and building of a global governance system. While developing a Chinese perspective for students, the program also aims to expand their global vision and enhance their capacity to contribute to the reform and improvement of the global governance system.

Integration: Establishing an interdisciplinary system involving political, business and academic sectors

An open learning platform featuring sound interaction across political, business and academic communities will be established through partnership with government departments, multinational corporations, think tanks and non-governmental organizations of various countries and through the integration of China's national, regional and global governance practices. The curriculum highlights interdisciplinary training in economics, political science, sociology, and public policy and management, helping students foster a profound comprehension of international affairs and law via multidisciplinary approaches and professional instruction.

Global-oriented: Highlighting educational collaboration between home and abroad.

The program is collectively developed with Chinese government bodies, international organizations, multinationals and non-government organizations. Through offering students opportunities to participate in international conferences and take internships and conduct policy research for international organizations, the program aims to enhance their global competence in engaging with international affairs.

Academic tutors (part of the faculty)

Yan Xuetong: Dean of Institute of International Relations of Tsinghua University, Secretary-General of the World Peace Forum, foreign academician and long-term professor of Russian Academy of Sciences. His main research interests are international relations theory, Sino-US relations and international security.

Zhao Kejin: Professor and vice dean of the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, vice-president of the International Political Studies Committee, China Association of Higher Education, academic director of Master in International Affairs. His main research interests include introduction to global governance, public diplomacy, regional studies, etc.

Sun Xuefeng: Professor and executive vice dean of Institute of International Relations, Tsinghua University, the vice president of China Institute of International Relations. His main research interests are China's rise and international order, East Asian studies, and international relations research methodology.

Tang Xiaoyang: Professor and head of the Department of International Relations in Tsinghua University. His main research interests include international development, industrial park governance, China-Africa relations, etc.

Liu Feng: Professor and deputy director of the Department of International Relations, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include international security, East Asian studies, Chinese diplomacy, etc.

Da Wei: Professor and director of Center for Strategic and Security Studies, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include Sino-US relations and national security,etc.

Chen Qi: Professor and director of Center for the Study of China-U.S. Relations, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include global governance and Sino-US relations,etc.

Yang Xuedong: Professor and head of the Department of Political Science, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include political theory, global governance and national governance,etc.

Wang Yong: Deputy director and professor of Institute of Theoretical Economics, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include game theory, industrial park economy and platform economy,etc.

Zhu Xufeng: Executive dean and professor of School of Public Policy & Management, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include international public policy, global sustainable development and think tank research,etc.

Zhou Qingan: Dean and professor of School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include global communication and public diplomacy etc.

Pan Qingzhong: Professor and executive vice dean of Schwarzman Scholars, Tsinghua University. His main research interests include global leadership, multinational corporations and international affairs,etc.

Admissions

Required Qualifications of Applicants

1. Non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.

2. Academic degree equivalent to a bachelor degree in China. In principle, the degree diploma awarded by overseas universities should be authenticated by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P.R.China and such certification reports shall be submitted for qualification review.

3. Preferably civil servants from governments around the world, civil servants in international organizations, senior managers, staff from universities and academic institutions, or those working in the field related to international affairs.

4. At least 3 years of full-time working experience after earning the bachelor degree before enrollment.

5. Must be proficient in the English language.

6. Applicants should be in good health and of good character (meet the physical examination requirements stipulated by the country and THU), be well-behaved and be willing to abide by China's laws and regulations, as well as Tsinghua's rules.

Evaluation and Admission

This program admits students based on evaluation of their application documents together with a comprehensive assessment. The application materials are reviewed by an expert group of the relevant departments/schools, and the candidates for the comprehensive assessment will be selected based on the review results. The comprehensive assessment is generally based on interviews. The specific content, format, requirements and time arrangements will be notified to applicants who enter the comprehensive assessment.

Training Methods

With part-time learning as its mode of study, usually this program is taught on weekends or during several specified continuing periods. The program is generally required to be completed in 2-3 years.

The program consists of three components: modules, practice sessions, and a policy report or dissertation. Core modules include A Survey of China, The Analysis of International Relations, International Negotiation, Regional Studies, Global Governance, International Security, Digital Governance, China's Foreign Policies, China and Developing Countries, and Developmental Political Economy.

Tuition fees for each international student is 140,000 RMB for the whole program.

1st Year: Tuition 90,000 RMB

2nd Year: Tuition 50,000 RMB

Degree Award

According to the relevant rules of Tsinghua University on student enrollment management and degree granting, students, after finishing all the program requirements, can apply for the diploma and degree of Master of International Affairs of Tsinghua University.
